Economic Impact of Decision Making
in the News

Cost/Benefit Analysis

Lesson Description

Using newspaper articles from the Local and State sections of the newspaper, students will interpret the impact a given event will have on communities and their economies. They will also deduct how the decisions made influenced the outcome of the event. An economic impact could be small or only applicable to one family, or the impact could be a large disaster costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

Using contemporary news, students will evaluate economic consequences of political, social, or environmental events by debating the impact of events on them, both as individuals and as a society. Development of reading comprehension skills will be a major focus of the lesson, as students will be required to identify the basic components of all news articles.

Students will locate and cut out a newspaper article related to health care, categorized it into one of three categories: Health Care Cost, Research and Development Cost, or Illness and Disease Cost.   • Understand that insurance, taxes and deductibles are taken out of paychecks.
     

  • Understand, write, use and balance a checking account and include a savings account.
     

  • Keep a checking ledger balanced.
     

  • Speak politely on the telephone to inquire about housing.
     

  • Read the newspaper and use other media to find housing.
     

  • Comprehend how far a dollar goes when purchasing food, clothing, gas for autos, etc.
