Oklahoma Stock Market Game™ Program Sponsors

Oklahoma Council on Economic Education
Foundation for Investor Education

The Stock Market GameTM (SMGTM) is a highly successful, interactive, interdisciplinary educational tool used in grades 4-12, in post secondary settings and with adults throughout the country.

The SMGTM motivates student learning about economics, finance, and the American economic system. Over the last 20 years, this program has helped more than six million students nationwide and in 15 other countries learn how financial markets work and how capital is raised to fund business growth. Teams of three to five students invest a hypothetical $100,000.00 in a portfolio of common stocks and mutual funds listed on the New York and American stock exchanges and the NASDAQ market.

Participants develop skills in math, economics, language arts, social studies, business education, technology, life skills, and critical thinking, while building and maintaining a stock portfolio. Teams use the Internet to follow their portfolios, research stocks, study how the financial markets work, enter trades at close to real-time prices, manage budgets, and see their weekly regional and state rankings.

Teachers turn to the SMG™ in Oklahoma to help meet Oklahoma Standards. Teachers also find SMG™ provides an unmatched level of comprehensive curriculum materials, print and on-line for students of all ability levels as well as hands-on support.

The Oklahoma Council on Economic Education (OCEE) coordinates SMG™ for all school districts and adults in the state of Oklahoma as part of its mission to raise the economic literacy of Oklahoma citizens. It achieves this primarily by working with Oklahoma public and private school teachers and their students. Training of teachers and adults allows them, their students and their families to become informed voters, consumers, employers, savers and employees. OCEE is part of the National Council of Economic Education and its network of university – based affiliated state councils. OCEE works with the Center for Economic Education at the University of Central Oklahoma that develops programs for teachers.

Competitive Divisions and Awards

Participating school teams will compete against other participating schools in the same divisions (grades 4 - 8 and grades 9 - 12). The state will be organized into 4 geographic regions. Teachers and other adults participating will be ranked separately.

Rankings are determined by the value of the stock and cash in portfolios. The Oklahoma Council on Economic Education recognizes the first-, second- and third-place teams in each region at an awards dinner held in each region.

3 Stock Rule

Each team is required to make at least 3 trades by the end of the 4th week and hold any 3 stocks until the end of the game to be eligible for the competition. This means that when looking at a portfolio for weeks #5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, a team must be holding a minimum of 3 stocks

**********Please take this rule seriously.*********
